Apple Rescue. Bird Buffet. Nature Craft. I call these Apple Chains. I’ve been out rescuing apples this week. Every time I see one in the grass, I feel a small pang but, no more: I have a solution: We’ve made Apple Chains. These little beauties make me happy every time I pass them and wonder if you’ve ever thought of doing the same?
We’re first time home-owners and have planted about 12 trees since we’ve moved in with our own hands my husband and son’s hands. ( Calling our lawn hilly is an understatement; so planting our apple trees on it gives us the feeling similar to winning an elementary school king-of-the-hill contest, which leads me to my point: I can’t let one apple go; not one.) My husband and I look at our trees daily, hoping that we’re coaxing them to grow with just our gazes. Have you experience this as well? While my first choice would have been to keep these beauties on their branches until they were fully ripe, I’m completely thrilled to find another life for these red beauties.
This is what you need to make an Apple Chain:
- Apples
- Twine, cord or fabric scraps.
- A sharp object for creating the a hole. I’ve used a knitting needle.
- Wood Ball, optional.
How to make an Apple Chain
- Gather Apples.
- Piece hole through the centers of your apples using the knitting needle or something similar. You need a center that is large enough to thread.
- Cut length of Twine. For this Apple Chain, we used both twine and hand cut fabric strips.
- Tie a knot at the end of the twine.
- String apples into the twine. String the apples one by one: tie knots between apples or add wood beads between them until you’ve reached the desired length.
- Finish off top by leaving enough length to be able to tie your Apple Chain to a limb of a tree or another place of beauty to feature your hanging and enjoy.These are also a wonderful walk and talk Nature Project to do with you kids, if you’re looking for some to do.
